The town has long been known for its pristine beauty, enhanced by the “Castle on the Hill,” also known as Monastery Immaculate Conception, home to over 100 Benedictine sisters. The monastery was founded in 1867 and draws thousands of visitors annually.
Ferdinand itself was founded in 1840 by a Croation missionary priest who admired the German work ethic, Fr. Kundek set out to attract German Catholics to his banner community, choosing the name to honor Austrian Emperor Ferdinand who donated liberally when he discovered a town bearing his moniker had been established in the New World.
